Students from AJ Baker public school planted Milkweed today in hopes of attracting Monarch Butterfies to Zorra Township.
THAMESFORD - Grade 4 and 5 students from AJ Baker public school were planting milkweed's throughout Zorra Township today as part of their Monarch Butterfly Project.
Grade 4 student Meredith Baldwin explains how this project got started.
"First we went to council and asked them to plant milkweed in different spots to help save the Monarch Butterflies and then when council said yes, we did the field trip today to plant to the Monarch Butterflies."
Zorra Township hosted three council meetings last fall inside the local public schools where they heard the AJ Baker delegation. Council was happy to approve the project and the students planted milkweed at three locations today at the Memorial Tree Forest on 43rd line, the Township office and at Grace Patterson Park.
Monarch Butterfly's eat Milkweed and the plants will help attract more of the insects to the area.
Ward 3 Councillor Marcus Ryan was on hand for the planting today and says it was great to see the kids from AJ Baker giving back to the community.
"It's super rewarding to go from the delegation to this point, it's extra rewarding for me because if you go back a few years ago this school was slated to be closed. It's a great news story in terms of the local school, local municipal government, Upper Thames Conservation Authority, all working together for these kids to do something better for their community. Not only is this a good news story, I think it is something everybody wishes and hopes that all levels of government would do things like this and here is our kids doing it today."
