Thousands of Canadians have been advised to carefully check their financial statements after a federal government department lost their information. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada says an employee reported last month that a U-S-B stick containing personal information of about five-thousand Canadians was missing. The department says there's no evidence that the missing personal information, which includes social insurance numbers, has been used for fraudulent purposes. But it says those affected have been contacted and advised to review and verify bank information, credit card information and other financial transaction statements. The department handles a variety of files including pensions, old age security, employment insurance and childcare tax credits. About 60 people have already called an information line at the privacy commissioner's office expressing concern about the incident and complaints have been filed. The department says there's no evidence the information has been used for anything fraudulent.
