Measles Cases Continue to Rise

There are 140 new measles cases across Ontario and 73 of them are in Oxford, Elgin or Middlesex.

SWPH - Over half of the new measles cases reported in Ontario this week were in Oxford, Elgin or Middlesex.

Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) is reporting 73 new cases since May 1st, bringing the grand total to 524 since the outbreak began in October. Ontario's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Kieran Moore, said there were 140 new cases province wide earlier this week, bringing the Ontario's total to 1,383 since the fall.

Dr. Moore said a total of 98 people had been hospitalized with the virus over the past few months, an increase of 14 compared to the week before. SWPH says 7.1 percent of its cases had been admitted to hospital, but didn't provide exact numbers.

SWPH says 76.9 percent of the cases in Oxford, Elgin and Middlesex were people under the age of 18. Just under 87 percent had not been immunized, while 2.9 percent had received one dose and 4.6 percent received two doses of the vaccine. The remaining 5.6 percent had unknown vaccination status.
