City Council has scrapped plans to sell off a portion of McQueen Street after residents brought their concerns to the table.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has decided to not close a portion of McQueen Street.
The original plan was to sell the section of the street between Reeve and Metcalf in order to make some money and it was thought nobody used the street anyway. Kevin Austin, who lives on Reeve Street disagreed and was allowed to speak at council on Thursday night. He told city councillors that his family uses the roadway everyday.
"Reeve is a one way street heading south, so if you close McQueen Street if you are coming from the West Side of the city, in order to get to our house we would have to travel a whole block north just to be able loop around and double back to our end of Reeve because you wouldn't be able to cut through McQueen which is right near our house."
Austin says he has spoken with some of his neighbours who shared his concerns. He was also worried about the potential developer turning the area into a big parking lot and making a blind alley along one side. In the end council agreed with Austin and decided to not close the street, however they did agree to close Bay Street near the train tracks.
