Maybe It's Time to Quit

If your New Years resolution is to quit smoking, Southwestern Public Health is here to help.

OXFORD COUNTY - If your New Years resolution this year was to quit smoking, Southwestern Public Health has a few tips to help you get started. 

Tobacco Control Coordinator Gemma Urbani says they have a few programs to help you get started. 

"The Health Unit has a internal program here, where we provide people with some free NRT to get them going and one on one counselling. Our community partners also have several programs to help you quit smoking, including the Community Health Centre. We also have the pharmacy program, with 5 pharmacies in Oxford County where if you are on OW or ODSP, you can access free NRT's from your pharmacist.

NRT is a nicotine replacement therapy. It can be a patch, lozenge, mist or a nicotine inhaler that replaces the nicotine from cigarettes. Urbani says quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health.

"Smokers have an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, heart disease and other complications if you are on medication." 

Urbani says it is also very expensive with the price of cigarettes increasing every year. If you are thinking about quitting smoking and don't know where to to turn to for help, you can contact Southwestern Public Health at 519-421-9901 ext 3460. 

Quit smoking workshops are offered regularly by Southwestern Public Health. Eligible participants receive 5 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (e.g. patches, gum, lozenges, mist, inhalers). Call 1-800-922-0096 for more information or to register. They also offer cessation clinics in Woodstock and Tillsonburg.
