"In response to the evolving COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, no new eviction orders will be issued until further notice and sheriff’s offices will postpone any scheduled enforcement of current eviction orders. Tenants must pay rent while an eviction order is not being enforced."
ONTARIO - It's the first of May and rent is due across the Province.
Many people are struggling to make ends meet right now and are living off the CERB or E.I. This is just a reminder that you cannot be evicted right now, thanks to a Provincial order. Here is the statement on the Province of Ontario's web site.
"In response to the evolving COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, no new eviction orders will be issued until further notice and sheriff’s offices will postpone any scheduled enforcement of current eviction orders. Tenants must pay rent while an eviction order is not being enforced."
This does not mean your rent is forgiven and you still owe that money, however the Premier has been clear, if you are choosing between rent and groceries right now, get your groceries.
It is illegal for a landlord to change the locks to a rental unit or the building, without giving the tenant a key for the new locks. If you are a tenant and a landlord has locked you out, or is threatening to lock you out, contact the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit:
