Oxford Public Health ties red scarves onto downtown posts in commemoration of HIV/AIDS Awareness Week
If you're in Downtown Woodstock, you may notice red scarves lining the poles on Dundas St.
This morning, local public health nurses tied the scarves to posts and on Tuesday they'll do the same in Tillsonburg.
It's in commemoration of Canadian HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, which culminates with World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1st.
Public Health Nurse Gayle Milne says the scarves are meant to draw attention to a serious issue. "The scarves are meant to look like the red ribbon and just remind people that HIV/AIDS is still an issue in our community, as well as everywhere in the world."
In Canada, there are 71,000 people living with HIV, and an estimated 1/4 of them don't know they are infected.
There are tags attached to the scarves with a prevention message, and information on free, anonymous HIV testing.
There is a drop in clinic on Wednesday at Oxford Public Health at 410 Buller St. from 1:30-3:30. "People can just drop in for testing. So, they don't need to make an appointment where as traditionally we do require people to call in and make an appointment before they come in."
Public Health invites you to take one of the scarves, if you need it. Those that don't get picked-up will be donated to a local charity.
