The Woodstock Police Service has tips to help Woodstonians have a safe March break.
Whether you're heading south on a dream vacation, or having a stay-cation for March break, the Woodstock Police Service has some safety tips for you.
If you're leaving home, Constable Stephen McEwen suggests making your house look like someone's home.
"For instance, getting someone to either pick up your mail, your newspapers and all the flyers that we get, or you can cancel any of those things as well. If you can, put some lights on timers, and if you have a neighbour who can maybe park the car in the driveway and move it in and out," McEwen said.
While it might be tempting to fire off a status update or tweet proclaiming how excited you are to be packed and ready for a long anticipated getaway, McEwen said that's not a wise idea.
"Do not be telling people that you're going away and just throw it up on Facebook, 'we'll be gone for a week, can't wait to get to Florida,' and let everyone know that someone's not there," he said.
For Woodstonians staying put for the weeklong break from elementary and high school, McEwen suggests drivers keep their eyes peeled.
"Please watch out for the young kids playing on the sidewalk and crossing the road. There is going to be lots of people around, so everybody just be safe and have a happy holiday," he said.
