The Mayor of Woodstock is giving his two thumbs up to the Make it Awkward Campaign to challenge racism.
WOODSTOCK - The Make it Awkward campaign started in Edmonton and is starting to pick up steam across the Country.
Make it Awkward was started in Edmonton by Mayor Don Iveson after a video surfaced of a man yelling racial slurs to a black man who was actually filming a video about how great the city is.
The idea is to call out racism when you see it and make it awkward for the people who are doing. Mayor Trevor Birtch says he thinks this is a great idea and it's something we should do in the Friendly City.
"For me I think this is long overdue, when you can confront racism, gender bias, inequalities along with treatment for people with disabilities or mental illness and really try to get rid of that stigma. We need to be the Friendly City that we are meant to be, we need to be tolerant, we need to be inclusive and we need to make sure everyone feels welcome and that there invited her. So when you spot people be racists or intolerant it is time to make them feel a little awkward, call them out on it in a nice non violent way and let them the reality."
Birtch says it's unacceptable to be intolerant towards others and of course we need to do this in a non violent way. The Make it Awkward campaign was started online with the #MakeItAwkward.
