Eligible voters in Zorra Township will want to keep an eye on their mailbox this week.
ZORRA TOWNSHIP - Ballots have been sent out in the mail to eligible voters in Zorra Township.
Clerk Karen Martin says voters should receive their municipal packages by the end of this week or early next week.
"They will open the envelope and there is a ballot, declaration form and a secrecy envelope. They fill out the declaration form and fill out the ballot, put the ballot in the secrecy envelope and then put both of those items into the prepaid envelope that would be returned to the office."
If you do not receive your package by the middle of next week, Martin says to call the Township office to ensure you are on their voters list.
Martin says the Township utilizes a Voter-View system that keeps track of all the electors through the municipality to ensure no one is voting more than once.
"When a ballot comes in, their name would be scanned off the system using a bar code that is on their declaration form but their ballot remains in the secrecy envelope completely secure and is put into a ballot box so it's completely secure and completely confidential."
Martin says it's important to note that ballots in Zorra will only feature the names of the mayoral candidates and the Catholic School Board Trustee nominees as all of the other positions have been acclaimed.
She believes mail-in voting is a great way to increase voter turn out "and to address any accessibility issues which occur when individuals have to come to a voting station when we have to ensure that the building is completely accessible and it can be challenging so in this circumstance individuals can vote from the comfort of their own home."
Martin says ballots need to be sent back in the mail by October 17 or dropped off a the Township office no later than election day in order to be counted.
