Woodstock Deputy Police Chief Daryl Longworth is back to active duty, after 11-weeks of FBI Training. "It was a huge achievement, and probably one of the hilghts of my career. But it wasn't just a personal thing, I think the community and this police service is going to benefit greatly from the experience I had down there." The FBI National Academy is a very select program for high ranking police officials from around the world. In fact, only 375 Canadian officers have ever taken the program, including Police Chief Rod Freeman. Longworth says he learned a lot in the areas of leadership, stress management and media relations. It included a gruelling obstacle course called the "Yellow Brick Road". "It sounds very quaint...from the Wizard of Oz...but it's actually a physically greuling task. A 6.1-mile run through the bush. And through the bush are all kinds of obstacles, climbing walls, netting, rock-faced walls with ropes and trenches with barbed wire overhead." But Longworth says he prepared for it. "I always try and stay in shape, but I did do a little extra to make sure I was ready for it. There were some injuries that day, some guys blew some shoulders, blew some knees, some ankles...a couple of guys were taken to hospital. I made sure I wasn't one of those guys." Longworth says another hilight was spending a day with the FBI's Elite SWAT team.
