Locally grown strawberries are already starting to pop up in our grocery stores and the popular Ontario June berries should be ready sometime next week.
Co-owner of Red Barn Berries Sue Hillborn says the Ontario grown strawberries you are seeing in the grocery store right now are what is known as day-neutral or Ever bearing strawberry. "Basically what it is a California strawberry being grown in Ontario, so it has that California strawberry taste. The June bearing strawberries will start trickling in during the first part of next week and will likely be available for 4-5 weeks."
Hillborn notes they did have a bit of frost damage from the freeze two weeks ago and the beginning of the season may be a bit lighter than we are used to.
However the strawberry plants produce new blossoms and they just push through the damage and the mid season and late varieties look tremendous so they expect to finish with a big bang.
The pick your own portion of strawberry season likely won't happen for another 3 weeks. Some other foods coming out of the ground soon include, peas, beans and of course fresh asparagus will be available for another couple of weeks.
