Southwestern Public Health has seen an increase in whooping cough cases to start 2024.
OXFORD/ELGIN COUNTY - Whooping cough is on the rise in Ontario.
Southwestern Public Health, which covers Oxford County has seen higher numbers. Program Manager of the Infectious Diseases team, Joanne Andrews dives into the current numbers for this year.
"For 2024, the number of cases we've had so far this year is quite similar to the number of cases we had last year, and it was elevated last year."
Andrews says so far this year a total of 54 cases have been reported. She adds whooping cough starts with the symptoms of a common cold, but the cough could stick around longer.
"The cough doesn't clear up in the typical length of time that you would see with a common cold. So, the cough lasts one to two weeks, and the cough comes in spells."
Andrews says if you think someone has whooping cough, you can visit your family doctor, or if serious enough make a visit to the emergency room.
