OXFORD COUNTY - A local esteemed historian is offering a free virtual presentation today as part of Black History Month.
Heather Rennalls will host the virtual event at 2:00 p.m. in partnership with the Ingersoll 50+ Centre. She says event will provide a brief history of the Underground Railroad.
"Some of the topics I cover is the Mill passage, Quakers, Harriet Tubman and songs and roots of the Underground Railroad and some settlements of the Underground Railroad.
Oxford County has roots in the underground railroad as well, with the Quackers in Norwich helping many escaped slaves settle into the Ingersoll area. Rennalls says she has given this presentation many times and people often are surprised by what they hear.
"A lot of people were not even aware that slavery even existed in Canada for one and people are often surprised when I talk about the black communities in Oxford County."
It is virtual, free to attend and it starts at 2:00 pm today, Tuesday February 15th. You will need to register first by calling the Ingersoll 50+ Centre at 519-485-3869 or emailing info@ingersollseniors.com.
