Cross country skiing can be costly.
WOODSTOCK - A local cross country skier is looking for help to subsidize the cost of races across the Country and in Europe now that he is no longer eligible for Quest for Gold funding.
Woodstock resident Bob Thompson says racing can get quite costly. "To be a member of the program I'm on in Thunderbay is about $12,000 for the team. That's just the expenses that we incure during the year for travelling and racing and that's just the budget they bill us for. We don't pay for any of the coaching -- that's handled by the organization -- but it's just all of the expenses that we will incur as they budgetted for us so we pay it in 10 installments during the year."
Thompson says on average, he competes every other weekend. "This past month I was competing in two races every weekend so I've had four back to back race weekends just in the past month. Then we have about two weeks off and then we start the next big period of races."
Thompson says there are different ways locals can help fund the competitions. "They can donate money or some sort of service that could be beneficial and then I give back for certain amounts like come and do talks at companies or some just do direct sponsorships and give their company logo on our team clothing."
