Lions Pool could be permanently closed by the end of the decade.
WOODSTOCK - As it reaches its 70th anniversary the future of Lions Pool was raised by Woodstock City Council.
Director of Parks and Recreation Brian Connors provides a timeline on how long the pool will remain open and what could happen following the closure. "Staff are looking, or have looked, at the pool and they think that it can continue to operate until 2019-2020. If we are looking at a new outdoor pool we would recommend that it go to the recreation complex rather than in the current location." Connors added they had a consultant study Lions Pool and their results found that due to population size Woodstock doesn't need two pools at this point.
It is the beginning of the end for Lions Pool and Connors provided the factors that will lead to the pools demise. "The biggest issue facing Lions Pool is its location that is the biggest deficiency that we can't mitigate. The reasons are it is landlocked, we can't put any additional parking in, which is a big problem, there is no ability to expand, and it is also in a bowl so flooding is an issue after rains the little parking we do have generally floods it out."
Connors explains that due to the age of the pool problems could arise at any time and there are improvements going to be made to Southside Aquatic Facility next summer. "It is a pool that opened in 1946 there is always a chance that it does fail when it is that old, this is going to be like a $2 million decision so it is a lot of money. If the budget goes forward it might be the only pool that is open in the summer because Southside will be down for mechanical work that would require several months to do."
