Tillsonburg Mayor Stephen Molnar honoured three local boys at Lake Lisgar Water Park, during Drowning Prevention Week.
TILLSONBURG - The town of Tillsonburg has honoured three teenage boys after they helped save three lives in Otter Creek.
It all began when 13 year old Caleb Dyck, 15 year old Zachary Dyck and 16 year old Nathanael Redecop were out swimming with some friends in Vienna back in June, when a boy became distressed in the water.
Another teenage boy went out to help, but the victim pushed him into the water, in an attempt to catch their breath.
An adult on scene jumped into the water in to save the two, but he also became distressed.
That's when the rescuers jumped into action and saved everyone. Tillsonburg Aquatics Supervisor Julie Dawley says they had been in the Learn to Swim Program beforehand.
"This is proof that taking swimming lessons and learning those valuable swimming skills makes a huge difference between life and death."
The boys met with Tillsonburg Mayor Stephen Molnar at Lake Lisgar Water Park during Drowning Prevention Week. They were presented with awards and lifeguard themed swag-bags.
Dawley says Redecop is actually planning on becoming a lifeguard now.
"He was able to become a participant in a program that we're running because of our lifeguard shortage. We're running a program called Lifeguard University where you come and take the programs for free and he is old enough to do that. He is going to become one of our employees."
Dawley has also nominated them for the Rescued Award of Meritt through the Life Saving Society. This means they will be honoured at the Governor Awards Gala in 2019.
