Local Liberal Tim Lobzun believes the provincial leadership contenders are genuine when they say they want to reconnect with rural Ontario. Rural issues was the theme of the first leadership debate in Ingersoll on Saturday. Lobzun tells Heart FM he doesn't believe they're just trying to score political points. "There's something else going on in the Liberal party, both of them, they're really looking at getting rid of the centre running everything. They really want to have more grassroots involvement and more input from the ridings." As for who Lobzun likes to lead the party, he says all of the candidates to replace Dalton McGuinty as provincial leader were well spoken. But Gerard Kennedy emerged as his favourite. "OPAL Landfill group had sent packages in advance of the debate and Gerard was really up on it, you could tell he had actually read it, so that really impressed me." Hundreds of protesters showed up in Ingersoll, from all across the region. They're upset over wind turbines, biogas plants, proposed landfills, and of course the ongoing battle over collective bargaining with education workers. Lobzun says the protesters did a great job of keeping their cool, and received a lot of media attention for their causes.
