The OPP are reminding residents to check in on their seasonal property through the winter and note anything suspicious.
Some people are already dreaming about cottage season, but the OPP are putting out some safety tips to keep that summer home safe during the winter.
Many thieves are aware that these summer destination properties will be empty during these long winter months, and OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says there are a few simple things you can do to deter any would-be burglars that come poking around. "We want to make sure that our homes and properties are locked all the time. If you have seasonal properties make sure that your valuable items and alcohol have been removed from the premise that way it's going to not encourage people to go in and make themselves at home, steal items, or target the property because you've left things behind."
If you can't make it up to your seasonal property, Narancsik encourages finding someone in the area who can stop by every once in a while. "We encourage them to have someone check their properties daily during the off season to make sure everything is still secure so that if something is amiss they can be notified. Make sure that there is information left behind so that they can be contacted but also that they are checking it regularly and reporting any suspicious behaviour as it occurs."
Something as simple as shovelling the driveway can also go a long way in keeping your property safe. "So if people can't get there to maintain themselves then maybe have someone there maintaining the property so it will appear frequented or that someone is there checking and it's a real deterrent for people who are out trying to break into those properties," Narancsik says.
