It's a day for kids to come and try the game of hockey for free.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Minor Hockey is asking you to clean out your garage and basement to rid of the used hockey equipment you no longer need.
The Just Try It program is coming to the Friendly City on March 18th, giving kids the opportunity to try the game of hockey for free using donated equipment.
Woodstock Minor Hockey President Michael Collins says the program is aimed at families who can not afford the costs associated with playing hockey or for kids who want to try the game before committing to playing for a season. "We're going to start bringing in equipment and plus have a one day event where they get to go on the ice, try it, go out there with instructors and the Alliance is all supporting us and it's just to get them introduced to hockey and see if it's something they're interested in."
Collins points out, if the kids decide they want to play hockey and the costs are an issue for the family, they not only have a payment plan to help with the registration costs but the equipment is covered as well. "When the event is done and if little Johnny is out there and is on the ice has a great time and says mom and dad I want to play, so then he registers in the 2015-16 season the equipment that little Johnny was wearing will be put in a bag, it will be marked with his name on it and then if he registers, that bag of equipment will be given to him to help offset the costs for the parents so that little Johnny can come play hockey in the 2015-16 season."
Woodstock Minor Hockey will be collecting the used equipment starting January 5th at their offices in the Community Complex between Monday and Friday, 4:30 - 9:30 pm. They are looking for equipment that fits kids ages 8 to 14:
- skates
- sticks
- helmets with cage
- neck guards
- jocks/jills
- pants
- shin pads
- elbow pads
- shoulder pads
- gloves
The one day, Just Try It event is free and will be held Wednesday, March 18th, 2015. Click here.
