Several exciting initiatives will take place throughout 2016 that marks the organizations 25th anniversary
OXFORD COUNTY - It is a big month for Crime Stoppers in Oxford County.
The anonymous tip line has been rewarding callers since 1991 which has resulted in nearly 1100 arrests. Coordinator for Crime Stoppers of Oxford Incorporated, Constable Jim Robb, explains why January is special for the organization. "Nationally it is Crime Stopper month where we like to promote the program, and reeducate the public to how the program works. Crime Stoppers is kind of a triangle between the police, the media, and the public, we kind of like to reinforce that alliance and kind of celebrate some of our successes."
In 25 years over 9,000 tips have been received, and Constable Robb knows 2016 is going to be a big year for Crime Stoppers. "One is a partnership with the Ministry of Finance dealing with contraband tobacco where we are encouraging the public to report illegal contraband, manufacturing, or selling. The 2nd exciting event is the launch of a comic book, they've introduced a character, called the "Crime Stopper", that promotes the Crime Stopper theme and message within the comic book."
Over $7.2 million worth of illegal drugs have been taken off the streets over that time with over $2.1 million recovered in stolen property, and Constable Robb says it is simple to use the phone service. "We always like to remind the public that when they call Crime Stoppers that their calls are completely anonymous and that all tipsters calling the Crime Stoppers line are eligible of a cash reward. The money for Crime Stoppers is raised by members of the board, and that board is comprised of citizens and volunteers across the Oxford County community."
