Ingersoll Council Planning To Replace Iconic Cheese Plaque

Council is looking to re-place a 7,300 pound cheese wheel that is historic to the town.

INGERSOLL - 2016 will mark a very special year for Ingersoll.

Council is currently looking for funding to re-place a plaque to remember an important milestone.  Economic Development and Tourism Assistant for Ingersoll, Chelsea Jibb, explains what they are looking to do, "We had a plague originally in town that was stationed at the Elm Hurt Inn, it was an Ontario Heritage Trust Plaque commemorating the mammoth cheese produced in 1866 here in the town of Ingersoll.  It was a 7,300 pound wheel of cheese produced by local cheese makers here and it was a major marketing piece of history for the Town of Ingersoll and its dairy heritage."  

Jibb knows there has been some challenges with this sign in the past.

"In 2005 the plaque was actually found laying at the side of the road where it was originally placed, so the plaque was actually returned to Town Hall and was then sent away to the Ontario Heritage Trust unfortunately it was never received. Since then the plaque has been missing, so now efforts are underway to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the mammoth cheese production by finding a replacement plaque for it."  

The cheese made several trips through the area, and Jibb talks about where it ventured.  

"It actually went to several state fairs in the United States as well it was shipped over to England, and from there Oxford County became the largest cheese producer in the world. Unfortunately there is no funding available from the Ontario Heritage Trust, with the assistance of council as well as other several private business the community actual hopes to unveil the plaque and unveil it by the summer of 2016."

 Funds will continue to be sought after until enough money is raised to replace the plaque by the middle of next year.
