Ontario drivers could face higher penalties if they are caught endangering the lives of pedestrians.
OXFORD COUNTY - Drivers who endanger the lives of pedestrians could face hefty fines.
OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk says the province has raised the penalties for dangerous driving behaviours.
"Careless driving; the fine is up to $2,000, six demerit points, possible jail time of six months and a drivers license suspension of up to two years."
Sanchuk adds drivers could also be slapped with the $2,000 fine, six demerit points and jail time if they fail to stop for a school bus.
"Time and time again we see drivers who are not paying attention to the roadways and have almost struck and killed children getting on and off the school bus. They're our precious resources; they're our kids and our community. We will support anything that promotes and improves safety for everyone in all of our communities across the province."
If you fail to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk or school crossing; that's a $1,000 fine and four demerit points.
Running a red light is also a $1,000 fine but with three demerit points.
All of the new penalties came into effect on September 1st 2018.
