Improperly Discarded Cigarette Sparks Fire Behind Pizza Pizza

About $5,000 in damage has been reported after a shed behind the Woodstock Pizza Pizza on Dundas Street caught fire yesterday. No one was hurt.

WOODSTOCK - No one was hurt after a shed behind the Woodstock Pizza Pizza burst into flames.

The Woodstock Fire Department is reporting about $5,000 worth of damages from yesterday's blaze.

Fire Prevention Officer Lukasz Kasprzyk says it was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

"With this particular incident, it appears that somebody walking by potentially improperly discarded the smoldering cigarette into the shed, which emphasizes the fact that people should be mindful of where they put out cigarettes."

Kasprzyk says the damage could have been so much worse, but the restaurant employees called 911 right away.

"They alerted us, called 911 relatively quickly during the beginning stages of the fire which prompted our response. Arrival was quick and suppression activities were very quick as well which prevented further damage to the building."

He says improperly discarded smoking materials is the number one cause of fires here in the Friendly City, followed by cooking-related fires.

Kasprzyk says smokers should use a deep and sturdy ashtray that can't easily be knocked over. You should never discard a cigarette close to any sort of vegetation, including plants and leaves.
