Ice Safety

Before heading out on the ice, read these facts from Norfolk OPP.

OXFORD COUNTY - Colder temperatures bring winter activities including those that involve ice. While colder temperatures and snow may appear to cause water ways to freeze, OPP are advising residents to take some facts about ice into consideration before heading out. The facts may help prevent a deadly situation. Clear blue ice is indeed the strongest, white or opaque ice is much weaker, while ice that appears 'honeycombed' should be avoided altogether. If you are planning on using snowmobiles or vehicles on the ice, at least 8 inches of clear blue ice is required while 12 inches is need for lighter vehicles.

Telling someone where you are going and when you are planning to return can also make a difference when it comes to saving your life, as crews can narrow the search area. Parents are cautioned to be mindful of their children playing near frozen ponds and waterways.

Key survival items that should be carried include:

  • Distress signals (flares, flashlight, whistle)
  • Ice picks
  • Fully charged cellular device or GPS or compass
  • Avoiding alcohol consumption when operating a vehicle or participating in ice activities. 

OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk says, "winter weather conditions can be unpredictable...remember safety never takes a holiday."
