WOODSTOCK - Over 180 people were able to enjoy a Christmas dinner, thanks to the efforts of a local Woodstonian and her friends.
Cheri McKnight hosted the dinner for the less fortunate Saturday night.
"This year we had a big meal at the River on Dundas Street. They had a big turkey dinner with ham and everything. They love my ham because I put pineapple with it!"
She also put together about 140 gift bags for them.
"I have people that help me out. All throughout the year, they give me shoes, boots, coats, scarves, and the whole nine yards. So we just put everything together, wrap it up, and give it to them."
McKnight handed some of them out at the dinner and she's currently distributing the bags to those who couldn't make it. She says it was pretty cold Saturday night, so some of them wouldn't venture out into the cold if they already found a warm place to stay.
McKnight has been doing this for about five years now and she says the need for help in our community has grown during that time.
She started out volunteering for the Salvation Army, but backed away from community service after her friend was murdered eight years ago. She says her good friend Tim Smith from Cycles of Life encouraged her to get back out there to help people in need. That's when she got out and there and became close with some of the less fortunate members of our community.
