Heart & Stroke awareness is an issue near and dear to the hearts of local firefighters.
Woodstock Firefighters are seeing red this month.
It has nothing to do with Valentines Day, or anything happening at City Hall.
They've decided to wear red t-shirts all this month, in support of Heart & Stroke Awareness month.
Paul Graham, Public Relations for the Woodstock Professional Firefighters Association, says firefighters are more prone to heart attacks than most professions, and it's an issue that they're paying more attention to. "I think the attitude is changing, as guys are getting hired now there's a bigger focus on fitness. There's a bigger focus on maintaining that throughout our tour. But I think the fact is you have to realize what we deal with on a day-to-day basis when we head out the door...it does wear a lot on the body and mind."
Graham encourages anyone to visit the Heart & Stroke website whether its for information for yourself, or a loved one, who could be doing more to take care of their heart. "We'll be wearing the shirts for the whole month of February. We've been given approval by the department to switch our issued shirts over to red. You know, what can I change in my life? What can I do better, or how can I help out those I love? That's the important message from the fire department and I know Heart & Stroke is thrilled that we're sharing that message by what we're doing."
The Woodstock Firefighters are the first firefighters in the region to promote the cause with the red shirt campaign and was a campaign they instigated.
