Two local health units are warning people to be extra cautious as we experience high temperatures over the next couple of days.
OXFORD/PERTH - We're in the midst of a heat wave in Oxford County and the surrounding areas.
Both Southwestern Public Health and the Perth District Health Unit have issued heat warnings for their respective areas.
Adrienne Adas, a Public Health Promoter with PDHU, says the heat can have a negative impact on your health.
"Extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death in case. Seniors, infants, young children and people with chronic illness or take certain medications are at greater risk for suffering from these heat related illnesses."
Some of the symptoms to watch out for include rapid breathing, dizziness or fainting, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, and extreme thirst. If this happens to you, make sure you move to a shaded or air-conditioned area, drink plenty of fluids and rest.
If you or someone you know has a high body temperature, is unconscious, confused or has stopped sweating; call 911 immediately.
Here are some tips to stay cool over the next couple of days;
- Drink lots of water.
- Wear loose fitting, light coloured clothing with a breathable fabric.
- Avoid spending time outside during the hottest parts of the day. If you are outside, make sure you take a break in a cool place like a shaded area or air-conditioned building.
- Take a cool shower or bath until you feel refreshed.
- Prepare meals that don't have to be cooked in an oven.
- Use curtains and blinds to block the sun out of your home.
