Preventing tragedies from the "silent killer" is another step closer today. Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman's Carbon Monoxide Bill has passed second reading in the Ontario legislature. But, the Hawkins-Gignac Act has been this far before. Twice, the bill died on the order paper when the legislature ended sitting. The bill would require all Ontario residences to have a working CO detector installed. Hardeman believes making the detectors the law would prevent similar tragedies, like the one that claimed the lives of local OPP officer Laurie Hawkins and her family a few years ago. The bill will now move into committee review, and it will be up to the governing Liberals to decide if the bill is brought back for 3rd and final reading. Private members bills rarely get passed into law in Ontario.
