Hardeman Calls For Referendum

Local MPP and the opposition Tories are calling for a referendum with regards to the Municipal Election Modernization Act.

The Opposition Tories and our local MPP are calling for a referendum on a potential change to the municipal electoral system in Ontario.

Ernie Hardeman tells Heart FM it's not that they think moving to a ranked ballot system is a terrible idea, it's just that something like this needs to be decided by the public.

"It's not the ranked ballot that doesn't fit, their is good reason to believe that it's just as good, if not better than the present system but we believe it should be the people who decide if they want to change the way they elect their members. We really believe that as it is with provincial, if you change the way you change the election, you have to have a referendum, so the people get to decide, the people who are governed by that legislation shouldn't be the people who get to change it for their own benefit."

Bill 181, the Municipal Election Modernization Act, currently does not require public consultation or a referendum before proceeding to a ranked ballot electoral system. Hardeman says they could have the referendum by itself or have it take place as part of a municipal election.
