Governor General Mary Simon made her first visit to Ontario today, since becoming the 30th Governor General of Canada.
Simon was greeted at Queens Park by Premier Doug Ford, speaker of the house Ted Arnott, and Ontario Lieutenant governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell.
The official ceremony this afternoon included a Guard of Honour and 21-Gun salute. Simon also toured the Legislative buildings with the Lieutenant Governor and the Premier.
Ford says it is his honour to welcome Simon to Ontario.
"On behalf of the Ontario government, I am honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon on her first official visit to our province. As Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General, she is a role model to so many people across our great country and I look forward to seeing her important work continue during this vital time for our country."
Simon is also spending the day meeting with indigenous leaders, including Glen Hare, Ontario Regional Chief, and Margaret Froh, President of Métis Nation of Ontario.
