Attack U-14 Bantams sweep weekend tournament.
The Oxford Attack Under 14 Major Bantam Boys competitive basketball team swept 5 games en route to a gold medal finish in a 12-team draw in a sanctioned tournament in Guelph over the weekend.
The Attack faced a tall and aggressive Brantford Rep squad in the tourney finale and came away with their most impressive victory of the season winning the gold medal game 50 – 42. The under-sized Attack rebounded ferociously and broke the Brantford press repeatedly with good ball handling and timely passing. Liam Dempsey corralled a team high 14 rebounds from his guard position and had numerous steals and jump balls throughout the game. Team captains Brandon Cowan and Callaghan Bullen led their team in scoring with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Lucas Gagnon played admirable defense in the key all game long and finished some toughs contested shots near the basket. Quinten Quackenbush-Schneider continued his rugged style of post play and finished with 7 points. Cubby Dempster went 3 of 4 from the foul line and Ben Jentz assisted the Attack press break and rebounded very well in the final game.
The Attack opened the tourney against the local Guelph CYO Knights team and won a closely contested game 43-39. Cowan and Bullen netted 18 and 16 points, respectively, as the Attack struggled with sluggish play from the opening tip and barely came away with a win to keep their medal hopes alive.
The Attack finished pool play undefeated with a 51-37 victory over the Penetang-Midland Magic. Dempsey and Quackenbush-Schneider had 9 and 6 points, respectively.
The Attack played a crossover game against the inexperienced Kingsville Class squad and came away with 60 – 22 win. Adam Bullen had 6 points and 7 rebounds, Matthew Keith contributed 6 points and 3 rebounds and Zackary Dykeman had 4 points in the Attack’s lopsided win.
The Attack faced the undermanned hometown Guelph Phoenix in the semi-finals and won easily 48 – 27. Ibrahim Taha had 5 rebounds and Cooper Gilson had 3 steals from his guard position.
Next up for the Attack is a sanctioned tournament in Ancaster in two weeks.
