GM Asks to Open CAMI Contract Talks Early

Workers at CAMI Assembly may have to open contract negotiations early in order to secure future work at the plant. There's word General Motors has requested negotiations on a new labour deal for the 3000 workers at the Ingersoll plant. The deal expires September 16th, but reports today, suggests GM wants a new deal done by March 24th. This, as GM contemplates where to build the next versions of the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox, which continue to post strong sales numbers. Canada is said to be the highest cost producer of vehicles for GM. On the other hand, the CAMI plant is one of the most productive. Last year, the plant cranked out over 300,000 vehicles. The CAW Local 88 has a proposal meeting set for Sunday, February 10th at the Western Fair Progress Building in London. CAW Local 88 President Dan Borthwick says regardless of when the contract comes up, he says they'll be looking for a pattern agreement. "We've told our employer we plan on going to bargaining and pattern bargaining that was established last September between the CAW and the 'Detroit Three' and more specifically with GM, that's our goal." While news of GM's request to open up negotiations early is just hitting the media today, Borthwick says they were approached by the company two weeks ago.
