For the first time in 29 years, a Canadian will be racing at the Daytona 500 this weekend.
ST. THOMAS - For the first time in 29 years, racing fans in Canada will have someone to cheer for at the Daytona 500.
DJ Kennington from St. Thomas qualified for the biggest stock car race of the year which is happening on Sunday. He will start the race in the 30th position and is the first Canadian at Daytona in 29 years. Kennington tells Heart FM he is excited to enter this race for Canada.
"It just makes me proud, to make this reference it's like if I played hockey all my life but I never got to play for Team Canada but I feel like I am representing Canada now and I am very proud of that. I have been racing in the States for a long time, I have 50 starts in the Xfinity series and their has been so many people that have helped me along the way. I want to thank everyone who has had a hand in this, all of my crew guys, volunteers and everyone at home who has helped make this all happen and to have Canada behind me, my phone has been on fire since last night, picked up over 1000 followers on twitter and just to have everybody supporting us and the whole nation supporting us is going to be really cool and hopefully it makes us have a good day."
Kennington started his stock car racing career at Delaware Speedway and has been racing his whole life.
The Daytona 500 is happening this Sunday.
