The Perth District Health Unit is encouraging former smokers to share their My Quit Moments on their website.
The Perth County Health Unit is asking residents to share their My Quit Moments in an effort to curb smoking.
Public Health Promoter Adrienne Adas tells Heart FM they have received 14 stories since they started this campaign and have gotten some inspirational stories.
"You know everybody thinks about quitting or most people that smoke are thinking about quitting on a fairly regular basis but something will be that tipping point for them and there is always that moment when they decide, ok, now it's time and then they take that action. We have gotten a lot of stories, some people have had health consequences from smoking that have been the quit moment for them, some people have noticed great benefits from quitting, other things can't be reversed, certain health conditions but there are always benefits of quitting."
For Barb the quit moment happened when her brother was diagnosed with lung cancer.
"He was 11 years older than me but I just always thought that everybody in our family was going to live well into our 90s. He was only 69 and he passed away. It just scared me so badly and made me realize that it could happen to me too."
In Cheryl’s story she noted the benefits she has seen since quitting; specifically, how quitting has affected her depression in a positive way.
"When I think about the fact that I quit and how my depression is, I would have to say it’s better because… I feel cleansed and I feel much more motivated to do activities. Which is good for people with mental illness. Getting out for more walks or the simple fact of being more active now I think has helped my depression."
