The Woodstock Fire Department has unveiled a new banner downtown in Museum Square as they launch a new fire prevention campaign aimed at cooking fires.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department has unveiled a new banner downtown in Museum Square.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says they are hoping to bring attention to preventable kitchen fires within the community.
"During this time of COVID and we are at home, it is kind of unusual circumstances and more family members are at home, it is easy for us to get distracted. So the idea is when you are driving by, you see a quick message that catches your eye to stay in the kitchen, look while you cook."
Unattended cooking fires are the number one cause of fires across Canada and the United States and account for 52% of all cooking fires. Stove top fires account for 71% of all cooking fires.
Fire Chief Jeff Slager says the campaign is focused on kitchen fires.
“Our message with this campaign is for our community to focus on fire safety in the key areas of cooking, these fires are preventable and together we can reduce the risk of injury or death by remaining in the kitchen while you."
Tips to a cooking fire:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave, turn off the stove.
- Keep anything that burns — cooking utensils, dishcloths, paper towels and pot holders — a safe distance from the stove.
- Loose-fitting clothes can come into contact with stove burners and catch fire. Wear tight sleeves or roll them up when cooking.
