Prime Minister Trudeau says if you are risking your health to keep this country moving and you are making minimum wage, you deserve a raise.
CANADA - The Government of Canada is going to spend $4 billion dollars to increase the wages of essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The money will be distributed to the Provinces and Territories, and it will be up to them to decide which workers count as essential and deserve a top up. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says if you are making minimum wage and helping during the pandemic, you deserve a top up.
"I want to underscore that this has been a truly collaborative effort, Premiers from across the Country all agree that we need to support our essential workers and I thank the Premiers for their continued Team Canada approach. We are relying on these workers more than ever and we will be there to support them. It will be up to each Province and Territory to determine who qualifies for this increase, but the bottom line is this, if you are risking your health to keep this country moving and you are making minimum wage, you deserve a raise."
The details still need to be finalized with some provinces, which will be expected to add their own money to the program as well. This is a developing story and we will provide you with more information when we hear what the Province of Ontario is going to do with this money.
