East Zorra Tavistock asks smokers to butt out while on township property or face a $150 fine.
EZT - As of January 1st of this year it has become illegal to smoke on any township property in East Zorra Tavistock.
Ontario has been working to become smoke free over the past 10 years. In 2012 the township introduced a bylaw which banned smoking at certain township facilities like soccer field or playgrounds. In 2015 even more limitations were placed to keep people from smoking in public.
According to Will Jaques the Corporate Services Manager for East Zorra Tavistock, after all of these smoking laws took effect, there was not a lot of places left in the township where you could smoke in public:
"There was very little land left on many of our township properties where smoking could actually occur. That warranted the discussion as to whether smoking on township property was there or not and council agreed that township properties would be smoke free".
Jaques adds that East Zorra Tavistock has always been a leader when it comes to smoking in public."It's making a healthier environment for those attending our public properties as well as for those made witness to smoking on the property too".
The fine for smoking on township property is $150.
