Expect An Upcoming Bump At the Pumps for Seasonal Blend

This warm weather means gasoline refineries may start looking at switching over to a summer blend, driving up the price at the pumps.

All this warm weather doesn't mean good things for our wallets at the pumps.

Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague says we are looking at a minor bump at the pumps this week.

"Going forward if you look maybe toward the end of the week, given the massive volatility on the energy market we could start to see prices rising. And that could happen as early as Wednesday. If I'm looking carefully, you could see pricing moving from 84 - 86 to 86 - 88 likely by Thursday or Friday."

But because of that warm weather the switch to a spring and summer blend of gasoline is likely coming up sooner rather than later.

"As temperatures rise gasoline tends to evaporate. It can create onboard problems with your vehicle's emissions and diagnostic systems," McTeague says. "So as a precaution government regulations and the industry have proceeded with putting more expensive additives into gasoline which tends to drive the price up about 4 cents a litre. Sometimes they do this in advance of April the first. So that we could see prices perhaps as early as the end of this week but more likely into next week rising as much as 3 - 4 cents a litre. It really depends on the refiner - their scheduled maintenance in which they really have to shut down the refinery in order to accommodate the new additives and from that point forward you'll start to see prices moving up."
