Meteorologists with Environment Canada don't need to see their shadow to know the rest of this winter will be mild.
It looks like the recent warm snap is going to continue for the rest of January. Meteorologist with Environment Canada Geoff Coulson says that while the temperatures will dip back below the freezing mark for the rest of the month, the weather should remain mild.
"It does look like the month of January is going to end on a note of somewhat milder than normal conditions: normal daytime highs for the area should be around minus two and we are looking at temperatures around the freezing mark. The only cold day coming up is on Friday where the daytime highs will be minus 4.
Coulson says the month of December set new records for how unseasonably warm it was. This January is not going to set any records, however the winter as a whole is looking pretty mild despite a couple of cold snaps.
"With respect to cold temperatures certainly this winter has not been a traditional winter in any sense of the word. In fact the snowfalls we have had so far are about 50 centimetres in the area since the first flake fell back in November and normally by the end of January we would be looking at total snowfall amounts around 117 centimetres."
