Oxford County stress the importance of "I am ready. We are ready."
WOODSTOCK -- If this winter's icestorms were any indication, Oxford County residents are not immune to natural disasters or other emergencies.
Emergency Preparedness Week kicked off Sunday with this year's theme "I am ready. We are ready." stressing the importance of individual preparedness.
Oxford County Emergency Planning Officer Kelly Tunney says families should be discussing the specific dangers they could encounter in the County as well as working to compile a 72 hour kit.
"There are a lot of things that should be included in the kits but some of the most important things are non-perishable food items and a manual can opener, bottled water, a radio and a flashlight and then items specific to your family's situation like items for babies and children, any medical supplies and medications, pet food and supplies."
Tunney says it's also important to think about neighbours, family and friends who may be vulnerable or unable to support themselves during an emergency.
"During an emergency, emergency responders are going to be very busy dealing with injured people and those who are in the greatest need in the first 72 hours or so. For people to have a kit and a plan, it will just ensure they are able to take care of their family during the first onset of the emergency."
"I definitely think that things like the ice storms that happened this winter are definite wake up calls that people should be aware that things can happen and that you can't predict an emergency but you can definitely prepare for one which is why that 72 hour kit is so important."
