Travellers are encouraged to consult a doctor before leaving the country. A travel health notice is in effect for three African countries.
OXFORD COUNTY- The Public Health Agency of Canada has issued a travel health notice for the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Program Supervisor for Health Protection in Oxford County Elaine Reddick says before leaving the country to travel for work purposes or other wise it is important to contact a doctor.
Reddick said that when a travel advisory is issued a doctor will run through, "Whatever precautions may be in that notice, the other thing is they would look into what immunizations might be recommended for where they are going there isn't a vaccine for Ebola unfortunately but for a lot of other diseases that are prevalent in other countries there would be a vaccine that would be recommended."
Reddick adds that Ebola is not a prevalent disease here in Canada.
"It's certainly not a disease that we deal with very often...it's very important to know that it is spread through contact with bodily fluids. So it's not casual contact if you were just in the same room with somebody that's not how it's spread, it's spread through direct contact."
U-S health officials have issued an advisory for non-essential travel to the three African countries.
The Canadian agency's notice included that Nigeria has reported its first death due to the virus, which has killed more than 700 people this year.
