Dr. Lock Says Vaccines Remain the Best and Most Effective Way to Keep Us Safe From COVID-19

"We have had many people ask us if the vaccines are failing. Despite high rates of vaccination, cases of skyrocketed and this feels surprising to many and more than a bit discouraging." 

OXFORD COUNTY - Vaccines remain the best way to prevent and beat COVID-19. 

That is the message from Southwestern Public Health Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock. Dr. Lock says she understands everyone is discouraged right now. 

"We have had many people ask us if the vaccines are failing. Despite high rates of vaccination, cases of skyrocketed and this feels surprising to many and more than a bit discouraging." 

Dr. Lock says the vaccines are not going to prevent you from getting COVID but they absolutely will prevent you from becoming seriously ill form COVID. 

"They do significantly lower your risk of hospitalization and even dose. With at least two doses, your risk of hospitalization is reduced by about 83 percent. With those same two doses, your risk of ICU admission is reduced by about 95 percent. So the vaccines, although they have not gotten rid of the COVID virus, they have certainly helped to make for the most of us, the infection to be just a severe cold." 

Dr. Lock says the goal of vaccinations was always to prevent serious outcomes of COVID-19 infection and lessen the impact on the health care system. 

"In addition to vaccination, the absolute most important step you can take is to reduce your number of contacts. COVID-19 can't spread if we keep our distance from others."
