Have you tested your Carbon Monoxide detector this fall? It's something that should be done twice a year, especially now when many furnaces and fireplaces are firing back up. And if you don't have one, get one this weekend. Oxford's MPP Ernie Hardeman is sending out the friendly reminder, in hopes of avoiding a similar tragedy that claimed the life of a Woodstock family, back in 2008. Meantime, Hardeman's bill to make CO detectors mandatory for every home continues to wait for 3rd and final reading at Queen's Park. "The 3rd waiting generally on bills is not done until the end of the sitting. Now the likely first opportunity is the first week of December when the house recesses from the fall session." Hardeman says there's a negotiation that goes on with private members bills with the Liberals. Hardeman seems fairly certain this will finally be the time for his bill, after three attempts. Hardeman's Bill, called the Hawkins-Gignac Act, is in memory of the late OPP Constable Laurie Hawkins and her family, who died of CO poisoning in their Woodstock home, back in December 2008. Carbon Monoxide seeped into their home through a blocked vent in their gas fireplace.
