Demolition of the old Woodstock Hospital will start as early as next week. The Hospital has announced the hiring of Priestly Demolition, out of Aurora, to take down the old buildings. It will take several months, ending by the end of next summer, at a total cost of $2-million. But don't expect to see any wrecking balls swinging at the site. As VP of Services for the Hospital explains, taking the old hospital down requires extra care. "It will require some time to remove some of the encapsulated asbestos on site and strip the building of its metals, copper pipes and wiring. There will also be a DFT Consulting Services that will be monitoring the demolition and abatement process to ensure that the appropriate environmental laws are being followed and we'll be monitoring air quality during the appropriate phases." The Woodstock Hospital will then start marketing the property to buyers in hopes of having it sold sometime in 2013. In all, it's 8.3 acres of land that was redesignated earlier this fall for low density residential. That was at the request of neighbours in the area, from public meetings earlier this year. Lang says it's another significant step forward in the long process of evolving from the old to new hospital. "Very proud that we're able to get to this milestone within 1-year of decanting the building. We're looking forward to completing the demolition phase and the eventual sale of the land." In a news release, the hospital says it will "During the demolition process, all appropriate health and safety standards will be strictly adhered to and all efforts will be made to minimize disruption for area residents."
