Your old cellphones could help women in abusive relationships get help when they need it.
WOODSTOCK - Domestic Abuse Services Oxford is asking you to donate your old cell phones.
Having a working cell phone is part of the safety plan DASO makes with everyone who visits their shelters for abused women. Even if the phone doesn't have a SIM card it can still call 9-11. Residential Services Manager with DASO Jenn Weicker tells Heart FM why it is important to have a safety plan.
"It is key for women to be prepared for any situation - so whether she is preparing to leave an abusive relationship, whether she has left a relationship already and we need to plan for her safety outside of the home or plan for her safety inside of the home."
You can drop off your old cell phones and chargers at the DASO building on James Street in Woodstock. Weicker says they are a lot of women in Oxford who need a cell phone to dial 9-1-1 in case of emergency. DASO provides shelter and other services like counselling to abused women in Oxford County and they help a lot of women in abusive relationships.
"We are consistently full and we have been for quite some time, we are funded for 17 beds but we can house up to 21 women and children at any time."
