DASO will be hosting an open house this Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
WOODSTOCK - Domestic Abuse Services Oxford (DASO) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Friendly City.
Program Manager Jenn Weicker says DASO made history back in August of 1974, as the fifth women's shelter to open in Canada
"Lee Lakeman was the woman who was at the forefront of that. She got the community council behind her and a group of other women who showed incredible fortitude and forethought in terms of giving women a space to flee to if they needed it."
The shelter was originally located on Hatch Street before it moved to Lawrason Street, Wilson Street, and its current location at 975 James Street.
Fundraising and Communications Coordinator Sophie Foster says they will be hosting an open house this Wednesday.
"It's basically going to be a day to honour our 50th anniversary and create a way to make it so the community can visit us. We're going to have tours of the facility, three different food trucks, and lots of fun mingling with the community."
The theme is Honouring Her Courage, in honour of Lee Lakeman's legacy.
The open house will begin at 10:00 a.m. with opening remarks scheduled for 11:00 a.m.. Everything should wrap up by 7:00 p.m.
Jenn Weicker and Sophie Foster stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Friday May 31st. You can listen to the full interview below:
