Crash Survivor Thanks Firefighters

A young girl named Desiree stopped by to see the firefighters who rescued her from a tragic collision 9 months ago.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department had a very special guest stop by the station on Family Day.

Desiree stopped by the station with her family almost 9 months to the day when she was rescued during a tragic collision in Woodstock. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says it was a chance for the firefighters to see a positive outcome from that evening.

"The firefighters who responded to the crash got to see a positive outcome from the work that they did that evening, as well as the doctors, EMS and the nurses of course. So it was a moving moment for Desiree and for the firefighters. She had some questions about that evening and we had some questions as well about her recovery."

Woods says the minute Desiree walked in the hall goosebumps all around - the amount of fight that this family has fought to get to this point is incredible.

"She had 11 breaks and so far has had 19 surgeries, she still has some recovery to go but is doing very well. She is working on her short term memory and they have worked very hard on her recovery. They spent 210 days in the hospital and her mother stayed with her the entire time, so it was a real battle for them and it was really nice to see them and wish them well on their continued battle to heal the body mind and spirit."

Woods says we are so very thankful that Desiree and her family came to see us and wish them all the best as they continue to heal the body, mind and spirit going forward.

"As this is a small community sometimes information travels through the grapevine and as was in this case we did hear now and then that this "Mighty Warrior Princess" was fighting a difficult battle with her family by her side. When the family reached out and said that they would like to come in and meet the firefighters that were on scene that evening, we knew it would be a bit emotional for everyone involved."
