Oxford County Council has decided to help the city cover the cost of security and transportation at the Woodstock courthouse.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is going to help the city of Woodstock pay for their courthouse security and transportation.
Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and the townships of South-West Oxford, Norwich, Blandford Blenheim, Zorra and East Zorra Tavistock will collectively pay 40 percent of the bill through a special levy because the courthouse technically serves all residents. Woodstock will pay the remaining 60 percent for being the host municipality.
But when all is said and done, Warden David Mayberry says it may seem more like a 45-55 split.
"The committee that made the recommendation didn't give any allowance to the other seven for their increased cost for prisoner transportation. So if you figure that contribution as well, that the other seven (municipalities) outside the city are providing, it works out to about 45 percent from the seven lower tiers and 55 percent to the city."
Mayberry adds Woodstock does benefit from having the courthouse.
"There is an economic value to having the court security people come to court. You have lawyers and judges and all of that spending money in the city so I think the committee that recommended it to council felt that was sort of a fair solution to the challenge."
The payment plan was brought forward by the Local Court Security Advisory Committee.
