Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif announced Friday that he will step down at the end of the month.
WOODSTOCK -- Oxford County's Warden is speaking out following the surprise resignation of Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif.
Lessif announced Friday that he would be stepping down from his position as Mayor at the end of the month -- citing "personal reasons related to family."
Speaking Monday, Warden for the County of Oxford, Don McKay mentioned he too was surprised by the news, before praising Lessif's public contribution.
"He's been an outstanding leader in Tillsonburg, their well-being as a town and as part of Oxford County is certainly much stronger today than it was when he first came on."
McKay says under Lessif, the Town of Tillsonburg has made progress getting its financial house in order.
"They made great gains not only in their debt reduction, but in Tillsonburg's budget process and their library services coming in as part of the county."
Lessif's letter, which was sent to media late Friday afternoon, announced he would be stepping down effective April 30.
"He will be greatly missed around the county council table. He's been a great supporter for the county's services and I'll miss him as an adviser, as a friend and we wish him well in his heath and with his family," McKay added.
Lessif's statement went on to say it was an honour and privilege to serve the town, saying he gave his best each day and that he leaves with no regrets.
As to who would be an ideal candidate to fill Lessif's role on County Council or when it could happen, McKay could not provide an answer. With the Tillsonburg chair and seat on County Council set to become vacant come May 1, McKay did add it will likely rest with the town itself to select a short term replacement before the municipal fall election.
Tillsonburg Council will discuss with the vacancy at its April 14 meeting.
